Dear Friends

SGR's Chair, Dr Philip Webber, will be speaking at a parliamentary seminar on
nuclear weapons at the end of this month - see details below. This event
will launch a series of briefings on the dangers of the UK's nuclear weapons
to feed into the intergovernmental conference on the humanitarian impacts of
nuclear weapons in Oslo in early March.

Please do forward to colleagues, friends (and your MP!)

Many thanks

Stuart Parkinson
Executive Director.

The Climatic Impacts and Humanitarian Problems from the Use of the UK's
Nuclear Weapons

Presentation by:
Dr Philip Webber, Chair, Scientists for Global Responsibility

Date: Tuesday 26 February 2013

Venue: House of Commons, London

Dr Philip Webber presents evidence that the detonation of the nuclear warheads
carried on just one UK Trident submarine would lead to vast quantities of
smoke being generated that would led to a sharp climate cooling, causing a
global crop failure which would threaten the lives of some 1 billion people.
This would be in addition to the deaths of over 10 million people killed
directly by blast, fire and fallout from the nuclear explosions.

This presentation will be part of a parliamentary event on the humanitarian
impact of nuclear weapons.

Committee Room 5, House of Commons, Westminster.

5.30pm - 7.30pm

The event is organised by the UK branch of the International Campaign for the
Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN-UK) and other speakers will be Professor
Sir Andy Haines (Centre on Global Health Security) and Dr Rebecca Johnson
(Acronym
Institute). The event will be chaired by Sir Nick Harvey MP.
