It is easy to miss the total dependence of the human race and nearly all other creatures on the land surface of the planet we live upon. All of our food, clothing and materials for industry come from land. All of our buildings - houses, factories, offices, warehouses, roads, railways and airports - are built on land. Without land there would be no farms, fields or forests. Yet it is well known that the human impact on the land of this planet is causing irreparable damage. Forests disappear, soils lose their structure, habitats are destroyed. At the same time, many make private fortunes from land speculation and exploitation, while many more are denied the basic facilities for living, in both urban and rural contexts.
The aim of this colloquium is to highlight the central importance of land and human relations with land in all economic and social considerations.
The fee for the day is £15 (including refreshments and a buffet lunch) or £12 if booked through the School Office at Mandeville Place prior to Friday 11th April 2003. The telephone number for enquiries is 020 7034 4000.
