The battle for sustainable development and affordable housing in Wales
continues
Tue 18th August 2004
Tony Wrench has just been informed that planning officer Catherine Milner
and the Pembrokeshire National Park intend to apply to the High Court for
an injunction. Either to demand his roundhouse be demolished or to stop
Tony and his wife Jane using it. http://www.thatroundhouse.info/
Ms. Milner earlier declined to attend a public meeting called about the
lack of affordable and sustainable housing in the park and instead - it
seems - intends to continue to bully Tony and Jane through the courts in a
case which has become a national battle for sustainable vs. unsustainable
development and attracting enormous public and media sympathy. Questions
are being raised in and around Pembrokeshire that the case is exposing a
lack of accountability to public opinion and democracy at the National
Park. Dates and times of Committee meetings do not appear on the
authorities website - which does not appear to have been updated since June
2003. (see
http://www.pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk/english/about_us/committees/main.asp)
If Jane and Tony refuse to comply with an injunction it may well mean
arrest and a prison sentence for them both - but the High Court will have
to consider human rights issues in deciding whether or not to issue the
injunction in the first place.
It appears planning guidance is being interpreted by Ms. Milner and the
committee of appointees that run the National Park in such a way that only
developers with local monopolies are able to get planning permission, and
then only for unaffordable and unsustainable homes.
None of the members of the National Park Committee that decides on Ms
Milners' reccommendations are elected. They are all appointed from other
bodies.
