Squatters have invaded Bahrain's old embassy building in London, which has
been empty for the past four years.
Police have been called in to clear the building, located on Gloucester
Road, Kingston, an embassy official told the GDN yesterday.
They said it had been unguarded since the embassy moved to its new
location at Belgrave Square, but the squatters moved into the building -
owned by the Bahrain government - over the weekend to escape the cold.
"The squatters entered the old premises to protect themselves from the
harsh cold weather, which has spread across the country over the past few
days," said the official.
"But the old building is owned by the government of Bahrain and it has
plans to carry out maintenance so it can be used for extra offices for the
new cultural attaché in future.
"The drawings are still being drawn up, as well as other necessary
procedures to start renovation work. We still don't know how many
squatters have invaded the building, but it doesn't matter.
"What we really care about is moving them through legal means."
