N. London, THIS SATURDAY: protest by local residents in housing fight

Next to the massive high-value redevelopment of the Kings Cross area (and
associated gentrification anticipated and already in motion), there is a
dispute going on over a piece of land being conducted by residents of a
working class enclave called Somerstown, an area which previously
successfully fought against the removal of their community in the original
plans for the Kings Cross channel-tunnel rail-link 20 years ago.

The 3.6-acre piece of land behind the British Library next to Kings Cross
owned by the Dept of Culture, Media & Sport, which is to be sold off
imminently, has become the focus of Somers Town residents' appeals for a
fairer share of the area's rapid redevelopment in the form of sports
facilities and council homes (as opposed to so-called "affordable
housing"). A bio-science laboratory run by the government's Medical
Research Council has been controversially bidding to buy the site.

"THIS LAND IS OUR LAND" PROTEST SATURDAY NOV 24th 11am KIDS WELCOME -
At the British Library site in Ossulston St

We got a lot of publicity last week around the St Pancras station opening,
but we have to urgently keep up the pressure on the council and the
government. We want the protest to show what we would like on the site,
and involve the whole community including kids and young people. We hope
that kids will paint or draw what they would like to see, and we will have
music and a kids entertainer as well. Any suggestions greatfully received.
Leaflet attached. If you are free any day this week at 3pm, we will be
leafletting schools and talking to the parents. Email or phone Candy 07946
