Titnore and Tesco update.

THE PROTEST camp against the 875-homes development at Titnore Woods,
Durrington, Worthing, is now approaching its third birthday and the
campaigners are still in good spirits. Visitors are always welcome and
help is always needed. At the moment beams of wood for building more
tree houses would be particularly useful, plus someone with a van or
truck to help bring material to the site. Tinned food provision are
always gratefully received.
Meanwhile, Tesco's application to go ahead with its massive Tesco Extra
store next to the protest camp is currently up before the council. Write
in against the new megastore, quoting application number WB/09/0146/ARM
and send to the Development Control Manager, Worthing Borough Council,
Portland House, Richmond Road, Worthing by 14th May 2009. Opponents are
also being urged to write to the Worthing Herald at
letters at worthingtoday.co.uk setting out their feelings about the
proposal (see below). The issue will also be discussed at the next
meeting of Worthing Alliance, to be held at Beechwood Hall, Wykeham
Road, Worthing, at 8pm on Thursday April 30.

Message from Protect Our Woodland!

As you will know a new Tesco Extra is part of the Greenfield development we
are objecting to. If they are allowed it will go up on the field immediately
west of the car park. Then the existing store will be demolished and the
site used to extend the car park, total parking spaces will then be about
800.

In this weeks Worthing Herald there is a featured letter (see below)
objecting to this store and the paper is asking for readers comments. As
without doubt Tesco will mass an army of ‘supporters’ and PR people to write
in and say the store will be marvellous etc, we want all, yes all of our
supporters to write in and say e.g. The store will create massive traffic
problems. Cause more job losses as more Town centre shops can’t compete. The
24hr opening and lorry deliveries will give local residents sleepless nights
or anything else you can think of. Oh yes and as the letter writer comments
below, the visual impact.

Please write today to: letters at worthingtoday.co.uk and remember every letter
counts.

The letter
..

SIR.

Anyone who has looked at the plans for the massive shed, otherwise called
the new Tesco Extra store that’s destined for Durrington, must surely have
been appalled by the look of it. How on earth could anyone have been allowed
to design something so out of keeping with the cultural importance of the
area.

Didn’t they know that the South Downs National Park is only half a mile
away – and we’ve been waiting 60 years for that!!. Anyone looking south from
there will be assaulted by a two / three story brick shaped shed made out of
timber look plastic, mirror class and glass reinforced plastic curtain
walling. The only thing that will make it look worse is if the illuminated
Tesco Extra sign on the top is flashing. Surely if they are to get
permission for a new store, councillors must ensure its built of sympathetic
local materials such as brick and tile.
