Woman spends £50,000 getting squatters kicked out of her home

Homeowner Dy Maurice has been left penniless 
after spending £50,000 to have a squatter kicked out of her house.

The 50-year-old rented out her £250,000 modern 
semi but the tenant secretly sub-let it.

And when she tried to evict the new tenant he 
refused to move, claiming squatter's rights.

Dy had to stay in a B&B as she fought a 15-month court battle to evict him.

But even after the mum-of-two won her case, she 
was left with a £20,000 repair bill for damage to the house.

Furious Dy said: "The state of it was 
unbelievable. The wires were sliced on my alarm, 
there were stains round my fire, ruined lamps, 
kitchen equipment gone, beds ruined, carpets 
disgusting beyond belief, curtains wrecked. This has cost me my life savings."

The former hotel manageress bought her home in 
2001 but moved to Dublin six years later to run a 
beauty salon. She rented it out but weeks later 
the tenant told her his business partner was now 
living there. Dy flew home but the new tenant refused to let her in.

She called police but officers told her there was nothing they could do.

Dy added: "I was livid. I had to go to a B&B. I was homeless."

When she got a court order, the man still refused 
to leave. It was another month before bailiffs 
removed him from the house in Macclesfield, Cheshire.

Squatting is unlawful but not illegal. But it is 
a criminal offence to damage property by gaining entry.

Squatters can be evicted by civil courts. They 
cannot be removed by force. If they live in a 
home for 12 years, it effectively becomes theirs.

But Dy said: "This law on squatters' rights is 
totally and utterly disgraceful and damaging, 
soul destroying, and it's time MPs realised this."
