(here's what Tony Wrench said on the Housing blog earlier today: 
"Rural housing doesn't mean you lose countryside. The British 
countryside was formed by people in the landscape. It is getting 
trashed by industrial farming, not people living in it. Planning rules 
could be changed, as is happening in Wales, to allow for self-build 
developments that are 'one planet' in terms of energy and transport 
use, use local resources, and are visually low impact. The demand is 
there and this would be easy to do. Survivors of this century will be 
those living in eco-villages.").
