I talk a little about this in the Free Range handout on shale gas --

However, there are no figures in existence worth a damn. That's because the
industry is so fragmented, running on many different contracts for different
activities related to drilling and production, that no one has yet produced a
real measured figure.
Even Ugo Bardi, who's pretty switched on from the point of view of data
sources, hasn't yet found any good figures (e.g. see
http://cassandralegacy.blogspot.com/2011/04/shale-gas-problem-with-eroei.html
). Charles Hall has done some work on US EROEI, but not specifically on shale
gas (e.g. see Gail's review -- http://www.theoildrum.com/node/7062 ) -- and of
course you can find Charles Hall's most important papers (especially
'Revisiting the Limits to Growth after Peak Oil') on the FRAW site in the
'economics' and 'peak oil' sections:

Hope that's a help.
