Under the banner of Bharti Kisan Union, farmers from many parts of
the country converged at Jantar mantar, at Jantar Mantar, the protest
hub of New Delhi, to demonstrate against the government's development dreams.
They chanted slogans, voicing their concerns over commodity prices,
compensation for farming land seized by authorities and high cost of
fertilizers.
Over the past three years, similar protests have hit many of India's
states, and in May, a land protest turned violent in the village of
Battha Parsaul, claiming four lives. Farmers are demanding higher
compensation for land acquired, rollback in the prices of
fertilizers, separate budget for agriculture, remunerative prices for
agricultural products and direct subsidy in proportion to land. They
are angry over their land being seized for public projects and then
being sold to real estate for private development.
According to a report by US Based Rights Group, the center for human
rights and global justice, suicides have claimed the lives of around
250,000 Indian farmers in the past 15 years, and the figure is still
rising with the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
being hit the hardest.
