Dear friends,

Today, October 15, marks the 25th anniversary of the assassination of
Thomas Sankara, who was president of Burkina Faso between 1983 and
1987. Sankara,
a soldier, arrived to power through a coup, but unlike other presidents who
came to power by the same means, he always prioritised the welfare of the
people of Burkina Faso. He nationalized land and distributed it among the
peasants, nationalized minerans, launched immunization and literacy
campaigns, banned ablation and defended by all means equal rights for women
... and confronted the dictatorship of debt.

In July 1987, he made a speech to other African leaders in the framework of
the African Union Conference in which he called for repudiation of debt, he
called for the right to say NO to imposed, unjust and illegitimate debts. A
few months later he was assassinated.

Today, 25 years later, his speech is still valid, more than ever, not only
for the people of Africa, but also in Europe, Asia or Latin America.

Today we are launching a campaign on Twitter and other social networks to
reclaim the figure of Thomas Sankara and the right of peoples to say NO to
debt. Here are a few links to spread today, beginning at 11 am, on social

Chères amies, Chers amis,

Aujourd'hui, 15 Octobre 2012, nous commémorons le 25ème anniversaire
de la mort de Thomas Sankara, qui fut président du Burkina Faso entre
1983 et 1987. Sankara, qui était militaire, arriva au pouvoir par un
coup d’état, mais à la différence d'autres présidents qui arrivèrent
au pouvoir de cette façon, il a toujours su mettre en avant le bien
être du peuple du Burkina Faso. Il nationalisa les terres les
répartissant entre les paysans, nationalisa les minéraux, lança des
campagnes d'immunisation et d'alphabétisation, interdit les excisions
et défendit par tout les moyens possibles les droits et l'égalité pour
la femme ...et a affronté la dictature de la dette.

En Juin 1987 il prononça un discours devant d'autres leaders africains
lors de la conférence de l'Union Africaine , dans lequel il appelle au
rejet de la dette, à son non paiement pour avoir été une dette
imposée, injuste et illégitime. Plusieurs mois après, il fut
assassiné.

Aujourd'hui, 25 ans plus tard, son discours demeure d'actualité, non
seulement pour les peuples Africains mais également en Europe, Asie et
Amérique Latine.

Aujourd'hui nous lançons une campagne sur Twitter et d'autres réseaux
sociaux pour revendiquer la figure de Thomas Sankara et le droit des
peuples à dire NON à la dette. Vous trouverez quelques liens à
diffuser aujourd'hui  à partir de 11 heures, par les réseaux sociaux.
