Director James Cameron's Eco School for Kids

MUSE School CA is an environmentally-focused school in Calabasas, California, founded by Suzy Amis Cameron, wife of director James Cameron, and her sister, Rebecca Amis, in 2006. The students grow produce on campus, the classrooms are built with recycled materials, and solar powered elements are in place throughout. They’re about to sharpen the school’s environmental focus even more, though, with their next big goal: going completely vegan by 2015.
The school children already eat plenty of fruits and veggies, grown in gardens on campus with guidance from MUSE’s full-time, year-round gardener and educator. But Amis Cameron says, “You can’t really call yourself an environmentalist if you’re still consuming animals. You just can’t.” Hence, Amis Cameron’s walking the walk and talking the talk by moving the MUSE school in a plant-based direction.
The Camerons went vegan in 2012 after watching the documentary, “Forks Over Knives,” and now use every opportunity they can to raise awareness about helping the environment, especially through adopting a plant-based diet. Amis Cameron says that they’re already easing students, and especially parents, into the menu changes to come at MUSE’s cafeteria.
“Food is a very sensitive subject for so many people,” she says. “People have their cultural reasons for eating meat, their traditional reasons, their likes and dislikes. But slowly we are offering educational programs through MUSE, for not only the children, mainly for the grownups, because the children, they live and breathe [the environmental way] already.”
MUSE School CA also plans to go fully solar-powered in 2015, and their new high school opens this fall.
