For 326 years the public have enjoyed free access
to Cirencester Park – which, at over 2,500 acres,
is one of the largest open green spaces in Gloucestershire.
On March 15th, that freedom will end. The 'cash
strapped' Bathurst Estate is introducing a
paywall for access, with outsiders charged £4 to go for a walk.

2a. Rewilding Britain: Labour wants to eliminate
the ‘trail hunting’ loophole if it gets into government

Labour says it will tighten the Hunting Act when
it comes into government. The statement came
after the party’s shadow minister for the armed
forces said that he wants hunting “consigned to
the history
books”.
https://protectthewild.org.uk/news/labour-wants-to-eliminate-the-trail-hunting-loophole-if-it-gets-into-government/

On Boxing Day 2022, the Labour Party said it will
“close the loopholes” that exist in the Hunting
Act. Huffington Post
<https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/labour-vows-strenghten-fox-hunting-law_uk_63a94a8fe4b0ae9de1b1a751>reported
that the party wants to tighten up the
legislation in order to eliminate trail hunting
as a smokescreen for hunting live animals in
England and Wales. Labour’s shadow environment
secretary Jim McMahon said Labour wants to
“protect animal welfare by putting an end to trail hunting”.
The hunting industry in England and Wales mostly
claims to ‘trail hunt’ today. This is when hounds
follows an artificially laid trail using an
animal-derived scent. However, hunt saboteurs and
monitors have consistently said and shown that
hunting as usual has continued after the ban.
This was explicitly stated by the former head of
the Master of Foxhounds Association, Mark
Hankinson, in a webinar
<https://www.huntsabs.org.uk/mass-criminality-in-hunting-community-revealed-through-leaked-webinars/>leaked
by the Hunt Saboteurs Association.

2b. Countryside Alliance: Labour announces plans to 'eliminate' hunting

News that the Labour Party has vowed to
“eliminate” hunting within its first five years
in power comes as no surprise, but it should
galvanise the hunting community to prove there is
no justification to legislate further on an
activity which has already taken up over 700 hours of parliamentary time.
In The Times, Steve Reed, the shadow environment
secretary, made the announcement as part of a
wider pitch to rural voters, saying that the
Labour party will implement a “full ban on trail and drag hunting.”
Mr Reed does not seem to have any understanding
of what either trail or drag hunting entail and
that they are currently lawful pursuits which
involve the laying of a scent across the
countryside for hounds to follow, with hunt
supporters – either mounted or on foot – watching
and following as part of their leisure
activities. Neither activity involves the pursuit
of a wild mammal yet Mr Reed is calling for the
activities to be banned, apparently to protect wildlife and domestic animals.

3. Dartmoor action postponed due to excessive

*POSTPONED* FORBIDDEN ISLAND TRESPASS

Dear Roamers,

We’ve made the difficult decision to postpone our
planned trespass to the ‘Forbidden Island’ at
Vixen Tor in Dartmoor this Saturday. Current
ground conditions are extremely sodden following
recent heavy rain, and are due to get worse with
a yellow rain warning in place for tomorrow it’s
clear there won’t be enough time for the ground to dry out.

We had huge media interest in our access islands
story, released yesterday, with reports in the
BBC, Guardian, Times, Independent, Telegraph,
Express and Mirror and appearances on the Today
programme, Sky News, LBC and elsewhere. The issue
will also be introduced to the House of Lords on
Wednesday. As a result of this extra attention,
increasingly large numbers of people planned to
attend the event on the weekend.

That’s brilliant and testament to thhe passion
there is to transform our absurd access laws. It
has however also increased the risk of potential
damage to the waterlogged ground and created
safety issues in the tricky conditions.

We’re gutted to be postponing - especially after
lots of elaborate and creative planning! - but
we’re confident it’s the correct decision. Our
campaign is all about creating a culture of
responsible access, and when the situation
demands it's right to put the land before
ourselves. We firmly believe that the right to
roam does not equate to unrestricted liberty to
act without regard for the natural surroundings.
And sometimes prioritising nature necessitates making tough choices.

First, many apologies to those of you who had
already made plans to attend. We’ll be issuing
full refunds to those who paid for coach deposits.

For those of you who may have already booked
train tickets and can’t get them refunded, we’re
open to organising something interesting on
Dartmoor to compensate for the postponement! So
please get in touch at
<https://www.righttoroam.org.uk/so/f2Ot7Y8oe/c?w=fWgktTYaHQaPG7kboNXya23EmOEwL6qlKlPhR0WQ6eI.eyJ1IjoibWFpbHRvOmhlbGxvQHJpZ2h0dG9yb2FtLm9yZy51ayIsInIiOiI3Zjc0MTJkNi0xMDViLTQyYTYtYWYzYy0wM2UyNWE3NWMyNjIiLCJtIjoibWFpbCIsImMiOiI4YzUwYzgwMC04NDk1LTQ5YjgtODYyZi1kZTQ3MzhmZGEzYTEifQ>hello at righttoroam.org.uk
if that's the case and we’ll explore the options.

Second, we have an alternative suggestion:

As part of our research on access islands, we
have compiled
<https://www.righttoroam.org.uk/so/f2Ot7Y8oe/c?w=oUCdjrEbR5UQcfE64uVVRiXI5LoF7BKoxHB_xKX1WPM.eyJ1IjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS9tYXBzL2QvdS8wL3ZpZXdlcj9taWQ9MUJpMW5wdGI3VzA1d3NWbF81THFqZnRWV196cnE5ZlUmbGw9NTAuMDIzMzIwOTIzMzg3MTA0JTJDLTUuMTE0ODkzMTEyOTAzMjMzJno9NiIsInIiOiI3Zjc0MTJkNi0xMDViLTQyYTYtYWYzYy0wM2UyNWE3NWMyNjIiLCJtIjoibWFpbCIsImMiOiI4YzUwYzgwMC04NDk1LTQ5YjgtODYyZi1kZTQ3MzhmZGEzYTEifQ>this
map of examples around the UK (do see the
description for caveats). We’d be fascinated to
learn more about the status of these islands and
tell their stories but can only do it with yoour help.

So if you’re looking for fresh ideas to fill your
Saturday, pick an access island near you and go
for an explore. Then tag our socials (handles at
the bottom of the page) with any accounts of what
you find, or drop us an email in response to this newsletter.

Finally, this was just the first of many events
we have planned this year. And it just so happens
we have another in the works, taking place in
Cirencester next month. We’re still working out
all the details but you can begin to sign up to
that event
<https://www.righttoroam.org.uk/so/f2Ot7Y8oe/c?w=Het99diyt_0I0WHltLLM3VSj9vef4r4moWc6YlQF96I.eyJ1IjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZXZlbnRicml0ZS5jb20vZS9hLWZheXJlLWZvci1hbGwtdGlja2V0cy04NDYwMzkyMTUwNjc_YWZmPW9kZHRkdGNyZWF0b3IiLCJyIjoiN2Y3NDEyZDYtMTA1Yi00MmE2LWFmM2MtMDNlMjVhNzVjMjYyIiwibSI6Im1haWwiLCJjIjoiOGM1MGM4MDAtODQ5NS00OWI4LTg2MmYtZGU0NzM4ZmRhM2ExIn0>here.

Many apologies again to those of you who had made
arrangements to attend this weekend.
