In Conversation: Frances O'Grady & Sharan Burrow
<http://www.ier.org.uk/events/%E2%80%98-conversation%E2%80%99-%E2%80%93-evening-event> In Conversation cover.jpgWorkers around the world are suffering from and struggling against the impact of austerity measures imposed on them by governments, financial bodies and employers. At the same time, the rights of trade unions to represent their members and negotiate collective agreements are under attack around the globe.
Two people who understand these problems more than most and who are tasked with protecting workers and promoting an alternative agenda are the general secretaries of the trade union centres in Britain and at the international level.
In this <http://www.ier.org.uk/events/%E2%80%98-conversation%E2%80%99-%E2%80%93-evening-event> 2013 ‘In Conversation’ Frances O'Grady, General Secretary of the TUC, and Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the ITUC, will outline their priorities in this period of austerity.

A note from the Ken Gill Memorial Fund
Dear IER member,
Some of you will have known Ken Gill personally, and otherwise you will very likely know something about him.
A lifelong internationalist and supporter of Cuba, the chair of the People's Press Printing Society that publishes the Morning Star newspaper, Ken Gill was first and foremost a trade unionist and passionate about defending union and employment rights. As General Secretary of white collar union TASS/MSF, a predecessor to Unite, and President of the TUC, he was also one of the driving forces behind the founding of the Institute of Employment Rights.
Following his death in 2009, friends and family established the Ken Gill Memorial Fund, a non-charitable trust, to carry on in some small way his life work.
With the help of donations and affiliations including from a number of trade unions, these are among the projects supported by the Fund to date:
* A concert of Cuban musicians held in London in aid of the Music Fund for Cuba in 2010
* A public event celebrating the 50th anniversary of British-Cuban friendship in 2011
* Beyond the Frame Photo Exhibition, a major exhibition and sale of Cuban art held in London in April 2012
* A visit to the UK in September 2012 of Aleida Guevara, an inspirational representative and spokesperson for the Cuban Revolution and its battle against the US Blockade, and for Justice for the Miami Five. Aleida spoke at numerous events across the UK, including at a packed fringe at TUC Congress and a meeting held in Parliament, and gave a number of high profile media interviews
* The Morning Star was also supported through advertising
This year, we expect to support a number of exciting projects centred on international solidarity and union rights.
The Fund will finish its work in 2017, 90 years after Ken's birth and 100 years after the Russian Revolution.
I am writing to ask whether you can help us with our work by becoming a 'Friend' of the fund, for £20 a month. A 'Friends" application form can be found <http://www.ier.org.uk/sites/ier.org.uk/files/Friends%20of%20the%20Ken%20Gill%20Memorial%20Fund%20for%20SO%20on%20back.pdf> here.
You can find out more about the Fund, and Ken's life including video and audio material, at <http://www.kengillmemorial.org> www.kengillmemorial.org
Yours sincerely,
Rodney Bickerstaffe

Public sector: cuts, privatisation and employment law
<http://www.ier.org.uk/events/public-sector-cuts-privatisation-and-employment-rights> Public Cuts Conference Cover Yellow.jpgThere are a few remaining seats for the conference in <http://www.ier.org.uk/events/public-sector-cuts-privatisation-and-employment-rights> London on April 17th, at which senior officials from Unison, Unite, PCS, GMB and TUC will come together to discuss the cuts and unions' reaction to them.
Don't miss this chance to hear Dave Prentis, General Secretary of Unison, address the room and to engage with him in a question and answer session.
<http://www.ier.org.uk/events/public-sector-cuts-privatisation-and-employment-rights-0> Public Sector Cuts Liverpool Cover.jpgThere is also a chance to join the debate at our Public sector cuts conference in <http://www.ier.org.uk/events/public-sector-cuts-privatisation-and-employment-rights-0> Liverpool on May 8th.
