In the news this week

The news this week has mostly centred on the Labour Party Conference, and
for the IER, on our new collective bargaining manifesto.

On Monday, authors of the publication Reconstruction after the crisis: a
manifesto for collective bargaining Professor Keith Ewing and John Hendy QC
were joined at a Labour Conference fringe meeting by Unite General Secretary
Len McCluskey and Labour MP Katy Clark, as well as Head of Equality and
Employment Rights at the TUC Sarah Veale.

The meeting was packed with journalists, MPs and trade unionists, and will
soon be available to view as a video online.

We were delighted to see how much support our newly launched manifesto is
already getting.

Ed Miliband’s pledge to “strengthen” the minimum wage in certain sectors is
a step in the right direction, both for workers and the economy. But it’s
not the most effective way to reduce income inequality or reverse the damage
done by the coalition’s cuts.
