news brief
Friday 29th April 2016
It's been an important week for the trade union movement. Yesterday, we celebrated International Workers' Memorial Day (http://ier.us12.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=9360c6212a&e=d6817ec71e) , in which we remember the dead and fight for the living. On this day, we mourn for those who have lost their lives due to unsafe practices in the workplace and confirm our dedication to improve health and safety standards for the workers of today. With the Hazards Campaign estimating that 140 people die from work each day (with work-related ill health accounting for the bulk of fatalities), our continued fight for better workplace conditions is crucial. Hazards released this report (http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=c398216653&e=d6817ec71e ) to explain how they came to this shocking figure.
On Monday, we will enjoy our May Day bank holiday in recognition of how the trade union movement has improved the lives and defended the rights of workers across the world. For a light-hearted recap on "what the trade unions have ever done for us", take a look at the TUC's angle on the famous Monty Python sketch here (http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=50ffb1072b&e=d6817ec71e) .
Lastly, this week is an important one for the labour movement as the Trade Union Bill's passage through parliament continued, with the opposition winning new concessions from the government, including on e-balloting and the proposed facility time cap. See our news section below for all the latest amendments voted through in the Commons. While we welcome any movement in the right direction, we still feel these concessions are too weak, and as the Bill moves back to the Lords, we hope they hold firm on the more robust amendments they have fought for.

Trade Union Bill Commons weakens Lords concessions on Trade Union Bill

EU TTIP investor courts come with almost no benefit but a huge cost
A Freedom of Information Access request by Global Justice Now has revealed the UK only secured one risk assessment with regards to special investor protections as part of TTIP, and it found there was far more risk than benefit to the move.

EU COMMENT: Rethinking liberalisation – to counter corporate takeover
Linda Kaucher of Stop TTIP UK lays out the meaning of "liberalisation" - a word that is thrown around by both the media and politicians, but which is rarely analysed in terms of its definition and its consequences for workers and the economy.

Ballot Thresholds The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

Keithe Ewing The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
