news brief
Friday 12th August 2016
Top bosses have given themselves 10% pay rises this year
<http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=edc0656818&e=0594b2782f>,
new research has found, at a time when real wages have fallen for the
average worker
<http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=9d9a308592&e=0594b2782f>
at the fatest pace across Europe.

The UK already has the widest pay gap in Europe despite being the world's
5th largest economy and it seems this trend is being allowed to continue.

The Institute of Employment Rights' Manifesto for Labour Law
<http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=fe490f8e8c&e=0594b2782f>proposes
driving economic renewal and stability by narrowing the pay gap and
introducing greater wage equality across the UK. Through a three-tiered
approach, the IER's recommendations strengthen workers' voice in
governemnt, at a sectoral level, and at an enterprise level to provide the
population with the opportunity to bargain for higher wages, better
conditions, and higher quality training. Inequality has been linked to a
whole host of economic and societal problems, including drug abuse, mental
illness, anti-social behaviour, and poor economic resilience on a national
scale. All of which we can begin to address by working together to create a
more equal society.

Our Manifesto is already supported by the Labour leadership

 and by major unions

including UNITE, UNISON, GMB, NUT, CWU, BFAWU and FBU.

We will continue to work to spread the message of an alternative to
austerity and neoliberalism, and gain support across the country. But we
need your help.

[image: Ballot Thresholds] The Conservative Government’s proposed strike
ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
*By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson*
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is
attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of
rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn
that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial
relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the
government’s proposals – strike ballots.

[image: Keithe Ewing] The mythology of business: from £6
*By David Whyte*
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of
things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10
myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever,
accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
