In a statement <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=8a5bbdb536&e=71131c031b> read out at the IER/CTUF fringe Preparing for Power at TUC Congress this week, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said the Institute of Employment Rights' Manifesto for Labour Law <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=c12d99cd27&e=71131c031b> will be "the basis for our implementation manual" on workers' rights come the next Labour government.

"As you know thanks to the tremendous work undertaken by Carolyn Jones, John Hendy and Keith Ewing the IER supplied us with a pretty detailed and comprehensive set of proposals for reform," he said, vowing that the Labour Party will draw upon these recommendations to secure "a renaissance of employment rights".

"That includes preparing now the detailed plans for the setting up of a new ministry of labour ... charged with spearheading the legislative programme to establish firm employment rights once again in this country and the return of effective collective bargaining," he added.

Our Manifesto for Labour Law project has now entered its third phase of development, and at TUC Congress this week we launched a new four-page summary <http://ier.us12.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=439778fec7&e=71131c031b> offering more detailed insight into our recommendations and comparing our approach to that of the Taylor Review.

We also launched two new publications: The Legacy of Thatcherism in European Labour Relations: The Impact of the Politics of Neo-Liberalism and Austerity on Collective Bargaining in a Fragmenting Europe <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=3072b580b6&e=71131c031b> and 8 Good Reasons Why Adult Social Care Needs Sectoral Collective Bargaining <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=b13dc938bb&e=71131c031b> . Author of the latter, Dr Lydia Hayes, also spoke at our Fringe event to outline the findings of her research into employment rights in social care and why she believes the industry needs sectoral collective bargaining.

Thank you to everybody who braved the wind and rain to attend our fringe meeting, and to those who came to see us at our stall during Congress. If you missed out, you can see all of our pictures, tweets, and materials on our TUC 2017 page <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=625b1db80d&e=71131c031b> .

The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
