First the gig workers, and now low-paid women in historically undervalued jobs like care work and childcare - thousands of those vulnerable to exploitation at work are hitting the streets to make their voices heard.

On Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th October, it's estimated that 8,000 female public sector workers working in Glasgow will strike <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=f94466425e&e=71131c031b> for compensation for past discrimination, a new job evaluation scheme to deliver pay equality and justice for all, and commitment from the City Council to fund pay equality.

After repeated attempts to negotiate with the employer, unions GMB and Unison agreed to take joint industrial action. The move has been overwhelmingly popular with low-paid workers in education, cleaning, catering and care roles, with ballots resulting in 90%+ votes in favour of a strike.

General Secretary of the European Public Service Union Grouping, Jan Willem Goudriaan, encouraged union members across the continent to send messages of solidarity <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=132a730eda&e=71131c031b> to the workers, stating that a victory in their equal pay case could be an "inspiration" for millions of women across Europe.

And it seems the unions and strikers are not the only ones urging employers to act over poor pay for female-dominated public sector work. The Public Accounts Committee this week called on the government <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=0418dfe52f&e=71131c031b> to raise pay and conditions for those - usually women - working in the social care sector.

In Rolling out the Manifesto for Labour Law <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=8a095b1aa1&e=71131c031b> - the Institute of Employment Rights' latest report, ideas from which have been adopted by the Labour Party - we recommend raising wages and conditions for low-paid workers through sectoral collective bargaining. This mechanism - which is widely used across most other developed economies - allows employers' associations and unions to negotiate for minimum pay rates and conditions of work for each industry. The agreement is then applied to every worker, regardless of whether they are a member of a union, who their employer is, or what employment status their employer pushes them into.

In another report for the IER <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=455a024600&e=71131c031b> , Dr Lydia Hayes expands on the Manifesto proposals to explain why the social care industry would benefit from sectoral collective bargaining.

Alongside these proposals, the IER also recommends practical reforms to equality law that would make it easier for those with protected characteristics to claim for fair pay. You can read about these in Rolling out <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=260b7782a1&e=71131c031b> .

	Labour Law Highlights 2017: £8
Edited by Rebecca Tuck
Catch up with the most important case law developments in 2017 in the latest of our popular Labour Law Highlights series.

In this year’s Labour Law Highlights, a team of barristers from Old Square Chambers returns to assess how each of these events has impacted upon case law in the last 12 months, including clarification from the courts on the requirements of the Trade Union Act in practice, the flurry of tribunal hearings regarding ‘gig’ workers, and further decisions on the rights of workers required to take "sleep-in" shifts. In each case, they provide commentary on the potential wider implications of tribunal decisions.
