Happy New Year to all our subscribers, and Happy 30th Birthday to the IER! Throughout 2019, we will be celebrating three decades of work bringing leading lawyers, academics and campaigners together to develop innovative proposals for reform. And what better time to celebrate our successes than now, as Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell has backed our Manifesto for Labour Law and the Labour Party has drawn from our recommendations to create its plan for transforming the world of work.
McDonnell will join us at our evening reception on February 06 2019 <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=36caffa6ad&e=71131c031b> , which is free to attend. But please register your seats as soon as you can, as we are quickly running out of space!
Meanwhile, we have been receiving happy birthday video messages from some of our high-profile supporters - scroll down and check out the videos to find out more.
The News Brief took its annual festive break over Christmas and New Year, so we have published a roundup of all the employment law news since we've been away to keep you updated <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=1c619bb32b&e=71131c031b> .
The biggest development was the launch of the government's Good Work Plan - based on proposals included in the Taylor Review, the wide-ranging criticisms of which can be read here <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=8c5c77d188&e=71131c031b> .
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) took forth 51 of Taylor's 53 recommendations - which sounds rather a lot until you read what they entail. The changes include repealing the Swedish Derogation (a legal loophole that allows agencies to pay temporary workers less than permanent ones); giving workers the right to a payslip; and allowing workers to request secure and stable work from their employer (though there is no right to receive it!).
As such, it has been widely attacked as tinkering around the edges without making any improvements that will actually help the UK's workers - one in ten of whom are in insecure work, and whose real wages have been stagnant for a decade.
As if to underline the distrust in the government's commitment to improving workers' lot, May's administration found itself faced with two strikes among the Whitehall workforce almost immediately after the Good Work Plan had been published.
Outsourced workers at BEIS and the Ministry of Justice will take industrial action over low wages and poor conditions, organised by PCS and the United Voices of the World unions respectively.

Labour Law Highlights 2017: £8
Edited by Rebecca Tuck
Catch up with the most important case law developments in 2017 in the latest of our popular Labour Law Highlights series.
In this year’s Labour Law Highlights, a team of barristers from Old Square Chambers returns to assess how each of these events has impacted upon case law in the last 12 months, including clarification from the courts on the requirements of the Trade Union Act in practice, the flurry of tribunal hearings regarding ‘gig’ workers, and further decisions on the rights of workers required to take "sleep-in" shifts. In each case, they provide commentary on the potential wider implications of tribunal decisions.
