news brief
Friday 18th January 2019
Footage from the launch of Rolling out the Manifesto for Labour, including speeches from Shadow Chencellor John McDonnell, Shadow BEIS Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey, TGI Friday's worker Lauren Townsend, RMT General Secretary Mick Cash, CWU General Secretary Dave Ward, IER Chair John Hendy QC and IER Director Carolyn Jones can now be seen below.
This week's news brief also features new video messages from Unite General Secretary Len McCluskey and NEU Joint General Secretary Mary Bousted as well as other senior labour movement figures.
These happy birthday wishes have arrived with us in the run-up to our 30th anniversary reception on 06 February 2019 in London. Click here to book your free seat!
We're also pleased to announce two new interactive, hands-on events, which are designed to update trade unionists and solicitors on case law over the last year. Two lawyers from the Old Square Chambers team responsible for our popular annual publication Labour Law Highlights will lead delegates through the cases that have shaped the law over the last year and oversee breakout sessions in which this information can be applied to the issues delegates are facing in their own workplaces.
This conference will be held in both Liverpool and London and there are a limited number of seats available.
Finally to the news and this week it is women workers who will be celebrating, after a 12-year battle for equal pay was finally won in Glasgow. This victory may give hope to the 600+ care workers - most of whom are women - considering industrial action this week after their pay was cut by up to £40 per night and childcare workers across the country, nearly half of whom have seen their wages fall so low they are forced to rely on state benefits.

News and commentSupport the IER in its 30th Anniversary year
This year we are celebrating our forthcoming 30th Anniversary and we're appealing for your support. We hope to raise £30,000 to celebrate our 30 years and with these funds we will modernise our website and communications; promote our ideas through meetings, education packs, videos and animations; and establish a reserve to avoid repeat fundraising.

PublicationsLabour Law Highlights 2017: £8
Edited by Rebecca Tuck
Catch up with the most important case law developments in 2017 in the latest of our popular Labour Law Highlights series.
In this year’s Labour Law Highlights, a team of barristers from Old Square Chambers returns to assess how each of these events has impacted upon case law in the last 12 months, including clarification from the courts on the requirements of the Trade Union Act in practice, the flurry of tribunal hearings regarding ‘gig’ workers, and further decisions on the rights of workers required to take "sleep-in" shifts. In each case, they provide commentary on the potential wider implications of tribunal decisions.
