The International Labour Organization (ILO) - the workers’ rights arm of the United Nations - has urged world leaders to promote collective bargaining <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=456b3cc2d2&e=71131c031b> as a first line of defence at a time when the rapid automation of work is putting jobs under threat.
The agency's Global Commission on the Future of Work, co-chaired by Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, set out 10 recommendations for member states - including the UK - to protect their populations as technological advances, climate change and demographic shifts transform the world.
"Countless opportunities lie ahead to improve the quality of working lives, expand choice, close the gender gap, reverse the damages wreaked by global inequality. Yet none of this will happen by itself. Without decisive action we will be sleepwalking into a world that widens existing inequalities and uncertainties," the Commission's report warned.
Among its proposals was for all member states to set out a new Universal Labour Guarantee of "fundamental workers' rights, an adequate living wage, limits on hours of work and safe and healthy workplaces", which should be agreed through collective bargaining processes.
As Löfven said: "The world of work is undergoing great changes. They create many opportunities for more and better jobs. But governments, trade unions and employers need to work together, to make economies and labour markets more inclusive. Such a social dialogue can help make globalisation work for everyone."
The ILO's recommendations chime with those set out in the Institute of Employment Rights' Manifesto for Labour Law <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=92322c91c4&e=71131c031b> , the latest report on which - Rolling Out the Manifesto for Labour Law <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=9b5f997ebb&e=71131c031b> - emphasises the crucial role of collective bargaining in leveraging automation to deliver benefits to all people in the UK, rather than leading to job losses and employment insecurity that could fuel even more inequality.

Support the IER in its 30th Anniversary year
This year we are celebrating our forthcoming 30th Anniversary and we're appealing for your support. We hope to raise £30,000 to celebrate our 30 years and with these funds we will modernise our website and communications; promote our ideas through meetings, education packs, videos and animations; and establish a reserve to avoid repeat fundraising.
