A Labour MP has moved a Bill to provide trade unions with the right to access workplaces <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=09d1395139&e=71131c031b> , basing its suggestions on a tried and tested law in New Zealand.
New Zealand's Employment Relations Amendment Act 2018 provides unions with the right to speak to workers in a designated space within the workplace, so long as they provide notice to the employer of their intention to do so. The worker is paid for the time they spend with the rep.
Making the case for the need for similar legislation in the UK, Faisal Rashid - who moved the Bill - told Parliament of large employers blocking unions from speaking to their workers. This includes union members and officials being banned from McDonald's sites and BUPA offices, kept apart from their coworkers by Amazon bosses, and intimidated and bullied at the InterContinental Hotel chain.
"As long as these practices are widespread, this country’s commitment to the human right to form and to join a trade union is hollow and meaningless," Rashid said.
"Why are our democratic trade unions being treated in this way, and why is the human right to join and form trade unions being denied? In part, it is because under current legislation there are no rights of workplace access for trade unions."
In our influential Manifesto for Labour Law, the Institute of Employment Rights recommends that trade union rights are strengthened to provide workers with a genuine choice to be represented by a trade union. This must include providing legally protected access to the workplace, as well as fairer recognition rights and the right to represent their members on work-related issues.

Now we present Rolling Out, a guide to how our recommendations could be practically implemented.
