New report analyses impact on workers' rights of case law over last 12 months
A new report from the IER analyses the past year of case law and discusses its potential impact on workers' rights in the future.
Labour Law Highlights 2020 is the latest in our series of case law reviews, authored by an expert team of barristers at Old Square Chambers.
This year's edition is set against the backdrop of a newly elected Johnson Conservative government and a yet to be defined Brexit settlement. We expect the next five years to be difficult for trade unions and their members. All the more reason for reps to arm themselves with an understanding of developments in labour law. While rumours about the possible contents of a proposed Employment Bill and Trade Deals abound, there are few recent statutory changes for this LLH to report.
However, our experts from Old Square Chambers have found plenty of judicial decisions to analyse, providing a wealth of materials from Tribunals through to the Supreme Court to assist trade unionists hoping to use case law to protect and promote the best interests of workers. So, whether it’s trade union rights, pay and conditions, employment rights or equality issues, the authors lead the readers through numerous judicial interpretations in a way that is clear, informative and we hope helpful in the year ahead.

TOMORROW: One-minute silence for health and social care workers
Unison, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Midwives have organised a one-minute silence in memorial of the health and social care workers who have sadly died during the Covid-19 crisis.
The unions wrote to the government last week urging it to formally support this initiative, but no official backing has been announced as yet.
Organised to coincide with International Workers' Memorial Day, the silence will be held from 11am and all residents of the UK are invited to take one minute to remember those who sacrificed their lives to help others.

IER and Covid-19
Due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease and the need to keep our staff, supporters and speakers safe, IER have decided to postpone all forthcoming IER events and meetings until further notice, including both Health and safety at work after Brexit conferences in Liverpool and London, the IER Executive Committee, IER AGM and our joint event with the Campaign for Trade Union Freedom on 6th June.
IER staff will continue to work, but remotely from home. We will answer emails, produce publications and circulate our weekly News Briefs and other on-line information. However, phone calls to the office or mail sent by post will not receive immediate attention.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and wish you all best wishes during this difficult time.
