The UK’s health and safety laws deliberately fall below international norms, and workers are paying the price
In a new report for the IER, due for release next week, Professor David Whyte and Andrew Moretta examine the UK's non-compliance with international health and safety standards. The UK has ratified fewer than one in five ILO health and safety conventions, putting it below almost all European Union and OECD nations and on a par with Libya, Mozambique and Saudi Arabia.
Introducing the new book, Editor of Hazards Magazine, Rory O'Neill warns that the UK's position puts not only its own workers at risk but sets a low standard for the rest of the world too - including countries from which we buy our goods and services.
While trade unions have had a powerful impact through agreeing safe working conditions with employers, Rory concludes we must go further and agree as a nation that our workers deserve to be protected by laws that meet the international standards.

IER and Covid-19
Due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease and the need to keep our staff, supporters and speakers safe, IER have decided to postpone all forthcoming IER events and meetings until further notice, including both Health and safety at work after Brexit conferences in Liverpool and London, the IER Executive Committee, IER AGM and our joint event with the Campaign for Trade Union Freedom on 6th June.
IER staff will continue to work, but remotely from home. We will answer emails, produce publications and circulate our weekly News Briefs and other on-line information. However, phone calls to the office or mail sent by post will not receive immediate attention.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and wish you all best wishes during this difficult time.
