Dear Friends

SGR celebrates 20 years of campaigning this year – and it's because of your
support that we have been able to promote ethical science, design and
technology for all these years. As the latest issue of the SGR Newsletter
shows, we have played an important and unique role over this period – and a
donation from you now would help secure SGR's future -

Together we can make a difference!

In the past year SGR has been as active as ever, achieving a great deal on a
tight budget. For example, in the last few months we have been:

* Carrying out our latest research project, which is uncovering disturbing new
data on the Ministry of Defence’s R&D programmes. This is part of our campaign
for a shift away from militaristic science and technology programmes.

* Giving lectures and presentations at numerous events including:

- a side meeting at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty talks in Vienna, - a
climate policy conference at the London School of Economics,
- and a student union debate on military-university collaboration at Sheffield
University.

* Campaigning on a range of issues including UK energy policy – especially the
inadequate government support for energy conservation and sustainable energy –
and the numerous problems caused by armed drones.

* Producing a bumper 20th anniversary issue of the popular and respected SGR
Newsletter. Additional material on SGR's anniversary has been published on our
website.

Your donation will help us maintain this level of activity and develop SGR for
the future. Our plans include:

* Publishing our research into the MoD's R&D programmes – including proposing
radical reforms to public spending in science and technology to support the
transition to a sustainable and more secure society.

* Relocating SGR into an eco-renovated office - which will showcase energy
saving measures and renewable energy technologies, as well as reducing the
organisation's environmental impact.

* Continuing to provide information to students and graduates in science,
design and technology about ethical career options.

* Continuing our existing campaign work towards a more ethical agenda right
across science, design and technology, on issues such as climate change,
nuclear weapons, cleaner and more secure energy, military and corporate
influence on science, biotechnology.

Of course, effective campaigning costs money – and so many urgent issues are
clamouring for public attention. As an organisation of professionals in key
sectors, SGR has a coherent reform agenda that unites science, design and
technology with peace, social justice and environmental sustainability. We
need your donations to further promote this agenda with like-minded
professional organisations, peace and environment groups, trade unions, the
renewable energy industry etc.

We look forward to hearing from you soon – your help is vital in keeping up
our important work and any donation you make will be very gratefully received

Yours sincerely

Dr Philip Webber, Chair, and Alasdair Beal CEng, Treasurer.
