SUPPORT ANTI-PRIVATISATION ACTIVISTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Thursday 13 February, 5pm - 7pm, South Africa House, Trafalgar Square,
London SW1

Residents of Khayelitsha, Cape Town's biggest township, resisting evictions,
water and electricity cut offs and repossessions have been arrested, harrassed
and attacked in the media. The ANC, the banks, and the police have all lined up
against them. Since July 2002, 15 people have been arrested on charges of
public violence, intimidation and contempt of court. Although a number of the
charges have been dropped, some people remain threatened with imprisonment. The
next hearing of their case is 14 February.

In Durban and Johannesburg people are also organising against evictions and
relocations. A woman resisted eviction from her council flat for not paying her
water bill. Over a quarter of a million people face 'relocation' in Durban from
their already polluted area to make way for a multinational factory expansion.
Meetings of 1000 angry people have taken place. The Landless People's Movement
and the Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee, part of the Anti-Privatisation
Forum in South Africa, have joined the protests. Now some residents of Cape
Town are organising against their children being excluded from school because
they can't afford to pay the fees.
