The government this week has boasted a fall in the unemployment rate to 4.9%, but with the number of people in insecure roles such as zero-hour contracts also rising <http://ier.us12.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=f257b19fce&e=71131c031b> , we wonder about the quality of that work. The Guardian this week published the account of one worker on a zero-hour contract <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=94b4b4951c&e=71131c031b> who provided insight into the extraordinary conditions people experiencing when in insecure employment.

Today is also "Take out the Trash" day, when the government releases a slew of often unpopular announcements just before parliament goes on its summer break. The Mirror has a breakdown of 11 pieces of bad news dumped this week <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=526bdb355c&e=71131c031b> including that the UK Commission for Employment and Skills - a special body to promote apprenticeships, skills and jobs - will be axed; and that nursing bursaries to help fund the training of new nurses will be replaced by loans, which must be repaid. The UK is already suffering a shortage of nurses and there are fears that reducing training support will lead to a recruitment crisis.

Lastly, for those who missed out on our Public Sector Cuts, Privatisation and Employment Rights event earlier this month, Bob Kelly has produced a report outlining the discussion <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=68208cea1e&e=71131c031b> , including links to download papers and presentations for free.

The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
