news brief
Friday 05th August 2016
UNISON has become the latest of the UK's major trade unions to back the
IER's Manifesto for Labour Law <http://www.ier.org.uk/manifesto> - 25
evidence-based policy proposals authored by 15 leading labour lawyers and
academics, which together provide a legal framework on which a brighter
future for Britain's workers can be built.

Other unions already in support
<http://www.ier.org.uk/resources/union-support-manifesto-labour-law> of the
Manifesto include UNITE, GMB, CWU, BFAWU, NUT, and FBU.

The Manifesto was authored as a submission to Jeremy Corbyn's Workplace
2020 consultation, and received backing from the Labour leadership team
<http://www.ier.org.uk/news/shadow-chancellor-ier-manifesto-will-inform-future-labour-policy>
on June 28, when it was launched with the help of Shadow Chancellor John
McDonnell and Shadow Minister for Trade Unions Ian Lavery.

We are delighted to see so many key players across the labour movement and
the Labour Party support a progressive future for Britain's 31 million
workers. The Manifesto aims to support our economy by reducing wage
inequality, creating jobs, and improving training so that we can improve on
our national productivity (currently at a record low compared with our G7
competitors). It is not the case that workers' must suffer insecurity and
endless cuts to save money. We have the alternative, but we need your help.

[image: Ballot Thresholds] The Conservative Government’s proposed strike
ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
*By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson*
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is
attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of
rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn
that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial
relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the
government’s proposals – strike ballots.

*By David Whyte*
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of
things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10
myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever,
accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
