Over five million workers - one in six of the entire workforce - is being paid less than they need to cover the cost of living and are stuck in insecure jobs.
This is according to research by the Living Wage Foundation <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=8d6e24b2a6&e=71131c031b> , which noted that 2 million of those in insecure, low-paid work are parents, and although those aged between 16-24 are typically worst off, one in two of those affected by low-paid, insecure work are over the age of 35.
The Living Wage Foundation called on employers to provide more secure and better paid jobs, such as by guaranteeing a minimum of 16 hours per week and announcing rotas four weeks in advance.
While the Institute of Employment Rights agrees that the Real Living Wage should replace the National Minimum Wage and that employers should be required to provide a minimum number of guaranteed hours to all workers, in our influential Manifesto for Labour Law we go further.
Sectoral collective bargaining should be re-instated across the entire economy to allow workers to negotiate minimum pay and conditions at an industry level. This model of industrial relations, already employed to much success in developed nations around the world, has proven to be the best way of raising and maintaining wages, as well as providing routes for progression to workers of all backgrounds.

Featured course
Investigating companies summer school
The University of Liverpool is organising a four-day summer school in collaboration with Corporate Watch in July, which will provide participants with the methodological approaches and techniques necessary for understanding and dissecting corporate finances and corporate governance structures. The course will train participants how to ‘follow the money’ and understand where power lies in complex corporate structures.
The course is open to all and details can be found here <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=7ce0b50907&e=71131c031b> .
We particularly welcome delegates from unions and part of the course will use materials from campaigns by trade unions that successfully challenge corporate power.
You can register for the summer school here <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=1b363e658a&e=71131c031b>

Now we present Rolling Out, a guide to how our recommendations could be practically implemented.
